Our story

Hello from Olives Cafe

Olives is a small licensed cafe on Island Square, a quiet cobbled corner of Downlong a few minutes' walk from Porthgwidden beach and the harbour — look for the hand-painted roses on the wall and the green tables out front.

The scones are baked fresh each morning — plain, fresh blueberry, mixed fruit and cranberry, whatever the board says that day — and the kitchen runs from homemade quiche and a giant sausage roll with salad to grilled halloumi and lamb kofta. Cream tea comes the Cornish way: jam first, then the clotted cream, tea in a proper pot. Tables inside by the counter and out front in the square.

Baked that morning
№ 01

Baked that morning

Scones stacked on the cake stands by half ten — the counter board lists the day's flavours: plain, fresh blueberry, mixed fruit and cranberry.

Cream tea, done properly

Cream tea, done properly

Warm scone, strawberry jam, Cornish clotted cream — jam first, and the tea arrives in a proper pot.

Tables in the square

Island Square sits away from the main streets — seats out front to watch the world go by, a few minutes from Porthgwidden beach. Fully licensed, if lunch calls for a glass of wine.
